Janet E. Hawes, 83 of Beach City, passed away Monday Feb. 4, 2019 of a long illness. She was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Allan W. Caley and mother, Mrs. Ailleen S. Caley, two aunts and several first cousins. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Hawes, daughter Susan R. Hawes, a sister, Carol A. Lilley of McKeesport, Pa., a nephew, Jay C. Lilley of Niles, Oh., a niece, Heather A. Murrman of Cecil, Pa. and one great niece, Mackenzie R. Janet was a 1957 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and taught high school Spanish and English. It was while teaching in Harvey Il. that she met Robert. Robert and Janet were married on July 28, 1962 in Kenton, Oh. by the Rev. Caley and Rev. Ernie Otter. After her daughter Susan was born in 1960, Janet took a break from teaching to co-found the Spina Bifida Association of Canton and ACT on Disabilities. She also worked for the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities. She was a active member of the Beach City United Methodist Church, where she taught children's’ Sunday School and Bible School, the Wildwood Garden Club, the Beach City Study Club and the Wayne County Mountain Dulcimer Players and some substitute teaching and volunteering at Camp Wanake. Services will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lantzer Funeral Home in Beach City with viewing from 5 - 8 P.M. on February 8, 2019 and one hour prior to the service.
